Room for Art is a visual arts project for health and wellbeing, run by Art in Healthcare. Taking place in seven groups across Edinburgh, all are now brought into one space online for the project’s exhibition Living in 2020. With everyone’s life having changed or been affected in some way by Covid, it has been felt important to encourage everyone in the groups to continue creating – particularly those who were shielding, bringing cheer and positivity, and to explore how lockdown has impacted on their daily lives and their mental and physical wellbeing.
Room for Art participants are referred by GPs, Link Workers and other third sector organisations, while some refer themselves. Participants may have mental health issues, physical disabilities, feel lonely or isolated, or have long-term health issues. Workshops are free and delivered by a professional visual artist, and the sessions are tailored to the interests of each group; participants are encouraged to explore and experiment with techniques such as painting, drawing, collage, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, jewellery-making, and more.
