Alt_D is an online showcase of ECA graduate students’ work, put together by students themselves as an alternative to this year’s official ECA Graduate Showcase. Launching on 10th August and centred on their Instagram page, the idea behind the enterprise is to celebrate the talent of this year’s graduate cohort on the students’ own terms, with the aim of creating an accessible, user-friendly and exciting online exhibition platform.
Submission was open to all graduating ECA artists, and over 140 students responded, from across all disciplines. By giving works-in-progress the same importance as finalised work, the exhibition acknowledges that students’ time in the studio was cut short by the Covid pandemic, the hope being to start a new, sincere conversation about what being an artist currently looks like. Other aims of the project are to create a supportive space, celebrating the cohort’s hard work and talent, sharing how their practices have been shaped by the pandemic, and encouraging other students to continue to create.
The showcase is set to feature a journal featuring articles, dissertation sections and covering what students have been doing since graduation. There are plans for an event calendar, to include panel discussions, DJ sets and artist interviews.
