Beacon Arts Centre in Greenock is hosting Immediate Forms – an exhibition by Joanna Holisz and Orla Kane of the work the two completed over the course of a single day sketching and painting at the Centre in October 2022. A grey day, with the water of the Clyde indistinguishable from the sky, the two spent it silently working on several sketches, building up a body of several works on paper – in their words, ‘a successful day’.
Orla’s smoother and more rounded forms can be said to be in a kind of dialogue with Joanna’s harsher, more angular shapes, but both artists tend towards landscape, with occasional recognisable shapes that don’t necessarily signify anything in particular – in fact the show can be seen as a celebration of the act of creating.
Joanna and Orla explain, ‘You can view them and enjoy them and take away from them whatever makes sense to you. Each piece is slightly different, but all are part of the same conversation. They are immediate and influenced by the places and thoughts we find ourselves in, but they are really just experiences in the joy of making.’
