Upright Gallery in Edinburgh’s new exhibition features Edinburgh-based artists Susie Wilson and Gen Harrison, who share a long-standing connection with printmaking and a love of analogue working, enjoying its playfulness and experimentation: Susie’s practice bringing her background in fine art printmaking into book-form, and Gen’s practice having strong foundations in the medium of letterpress.
Press Play takes a light-hearted look at the cassette player, with a nostalgic nod to everything that comes with it – taping off the radio, sharing favourite tracks with friends, documenting a point in time, tangled tapes and the ancillary use of pencils. The exhibition is an interactive one, which will evolve through audience participation: rewinding, recording, playing, pausing, fast-forwarding, stopping and ejecting.
Susie and Gen draw inspiration from the art movements of Dada and Fluxus, taking particular interest in how these movements worked collaboratively, making work in response to instructions and to one another.
