The 12th edition of Liverpool Biennial – the UK’s largest festival of contemporary visual art – is making a return to the city’s public spaces, galleries and museums. A dynamic international programme of free exhibitions, performances, screenings, community and learning activities and fringe events takes place over a 14-week period, showcasing Liverpool’s vibrant cultural scene.

The title for 2023’s edition is uMoya: The Sacred Return of Lost Things and addresses the history and temperament of the city of Liverpool, and a call for ancestral and indigenous forms of knowledge, wisdom and healing – in the isiZulu language, uMoya means spirit, breath, air, climate and wind.

Tate Liverpool is making a significant contribution to the festival, with displays by artists exploring the space between life and death, and ways of working through ancestral pain towards healing; highlighted artists in a truly international programme include Afro-Brazilian Isabel do Rosário, Edgar Calel, who grew up in Guatemala, American Torkwase Dyson, UK-based Lubaina Himid, and, from an intercontinental background, Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum, whose work is pictured.
