Hitting a significant milestone is Edinburgh’s original health food shop, Real Foods, which celebrates its 50th anniversary on 7 September. Real Foods began as a market stall selling organic fruit and veg then became known as “wholesale victuallers” and, later, a “scoop-a-market”. The Broughton Street store opened in 1975 (with oak shelving made from former local government desks that is still in use today) and the Brougham Street store opened in 1981, relocating from Morrison Street.
To celebrate the first 50 years, the business is hosting a Real Foods Day, which will become an annual event, as shop manager Ben Raffles explains: “We wanted to celebrate this huge milestone with a day on which we can help people live more healthily, sustainably and ethically, and with a celebration that may inspire positive lifestyle changes for the year-round.”
In store customers will be entertained with music and tempted by free samples, tastings and there will be a huge goody bag to be won.
