Originally opened in 1939, the lovely Art-Déco Birks Cinema in Aberfeldy was saved, after a period of decline common to small-town picture houses in the 1980s, by a dedicated group of cinephiles, including Aberfeldy native Alan Cumming. Reopened in 2013 after a major renovation, it is now a hive of activity with a full season of screenings from New York’s Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera, Royal Ballet, National Theatre (whose screening of Othello is coming up on 23rd Feb), plus the complete series of Exhibition on Screen, which this year includes biopics on Hopper, Cezanne, Vermeer, and Mary Cassatt (coming up – 8th March), plus music nights and a full programme of independent world cinema, as well as the latest Hollywood blockbusters.
