100 20th Century Shops

100 20th Century Shops

Ed. Susannah Charlton & Elain Harwood

This celebration of architecturally significant shops which shaped Britain’s shopping habits encourages us to appreciate the built heritage of our beloved high streets at a time when the retail landscape is rapidly changing. Between 2015 and 2022, 52 per cent of all UK department stores closed, prompting the Twentieth Century Society to launch a campaign to save these historically important buildings. This new book showcases shops of all kinds, from supermarkets, bookshops and co-ops to furniture stores, shopping centres and pedestrianised precincts, capturing the diverse design trends which emerged, from Art Deco and brutalist to Festival style and moderne.
